It is during these business endeavors that I get to meet a lot of different people each and every day. And if you have not been in Australia recently, you may not know just how diverse the English language is spoken. Australia has seen a huge migration level over the last couple of years. And each migrant brings with him or her, his own native language as well as the English word spoken with an accent. It all seems innocent enough. If all of us are speaking English then there should not be any communication problems. That however is far from the reality of the situation.
Here is an example. I am trying to take down an e-mail address of a client over the phone. The client has got, what I call, an extremely heavy English accent. To make matters worse, the client’s pronunciation of the letter “a” and “e” has got no distinction at all. So he will say “a for echo” which means that he actually are saying “e”. Needless to say that in repeating back e-mail addresses one often has to start the whole process over. After all, if you don’t get the e-mail address down right, the client is not going to receive the e-mail. The client on the other hand is getting extremely annoyed. His annoyance is understandable. After all, we all feel that our names are important and often wonder how hard it could actually be to get a name down right. That is all well when your name is common to your own ear and to those who know you. Thus, if your name is (and this is just for example purposes and randomly taken from the White Pages) Haectemichaen, keep in mind that there used to be a time and place in your life where you too had to learn how to get the pronunciation and spelling correct. My name is Lara Knell. Simple enough I would say. But even I speak English with a strong accent and on a daily basis I myself have to repeat the spelling of my name and surname.
In the end it boils down to patience and common decency. If you endure and keep repeating your name until it is understood, it will not be long before you are commonly known by the people in the business sectors you deal with.
